The Skill You Never Knew You Needed

It sounds weird to say this, but the ability to allow ourselves to feel negative emotions is one of the most important skills we can develop as human beings.

But when I say “allow” them, I don’t mean reacting to them or wallowing in them. I also don’t mean resisting or avoiding them. To allow a negative emotion means to be aware of what it is and what caused it. It means to let the emotion be there, even while we act in accordance with our values.

Once we learn to allow our emotions, those vibrations will move through our bodies and run their course. They won’t need to stick around and try to control us.
