We all know people that seem to be naturally self-confident. It seems so easy for them to walk into any social situation and be totally at ease. They seem calm and comfortable in their own skin. Many of us watching wish that was a talent that we had. Sometimes we think they are just “lucky.” They have a gift that we don’t have.
I have good news for you! Confidence is a skill that can be taught and learned! Yes, It may come more naturally to some than others. So does playing the piano. But anyone can learn to play the piano with some good old-fashioned determination and practice. Anyone who wants to can develop self-confidence.
Why does it matter, you ask? First of all, self-confidence feels good! But even more important than that, having confidence enables you to show up in your life as the best version of yourself.
A confident mom doesn’t wring her hands and worry what her in laws are thinking about her parenting style. She trusts her instinct, makes her own decisions, and doesn’t feel the need to explain or defend herself to her critics.
She enjoys her relationships more, because she’s not worried about what anyone else is thinking or saying about her. People can believe whatever they want, and she knows it doesn’t mean anything about her at all.
Her brain space is freed up to think about things that really matter. Instead of worrying about how others are perceiving her, or beating herself about all of the ways she falls short, she is thinking of others. She notices other’s needs, and thinks about how she can serve. She spends time pondering each of her childrens’ needs, and her calm mind easily recognizes the promptings of the Spirit.
President Nelson has reminded us (October 2018) how important we are in building up the Lord’s kingdom in the last days:
“My dear sisters, we need you! We need your strength, your conversion, your conviction, your ability to lead, your wisdom, and your voices. We simply cannot gather Israel without you.
It’s time for us to rise up in confidence! The Lord needs us. Our families need us. The world needs us! Let’s not waste any more time feeling insecure or inferior. Let’s develop the skill of confidence so that we can make the contributions that only we can make.
